NewCat Computer Category Test

A cross-platform (Win/Mac) computer version of the Halstead Category Test, considered among the most sensitive tests of cognitive dysfunction. Available to qualified clinicians and trainees in neuropsychology programs. In clinical use for over a decade, NewCat presents, scores, and generates PDF-formatted adult, adolescent, and short-form reports in one affordable package, with features that support both clinical assessment and research.

For my colleague James Choca — who authored the first Computer Category Test in 1996 and encouraged me to develop NewCat — I developed a cross-platform version of his bilingual multidimensional personality questionnaire (EAS-SABE) that presents the test items as text or audio in either English or Spanish, scores the responses, and generates a detailed report. Although no longer under development, the last version (v. 2.10) has been archived here.

In 2001, after teaching a variety of on-campus courses for over a decade, I was tasked by my department to lead the development of a fully-online major in psychology. By 2017 I had designed and taught 11 online courses, illustrated here by the banners I’d created for my course syllabi:

The pandemic of 2020 pressed instructors nationwide to move their courses online with little or no preparation. However, in my experience, online courses can be at least as effective and rewarding for both students and instructor. Unlike a class that meets just once or twice a week, it is possible to engage students in topical class discussions and projects throughout the week, commenting on their posts and answering questions that arise. This does indeed require more attention on the part of the instructor—often the most rewarding part of my day—and definitely increased most students’ involvement in the course.

With the permission of Danish jazz musician Oliver Prehn, I’ve developed two cross-platform (Win/Mac) applications based on the tool he developed to identify the variety of scales and modes that can add new color to compositions and improvisations. These are available as free downloads.

Apart from my career as a psychologist, I have worked also as a freelance graphic designer, employing the skills that helped support me through college and beyond.
