Featured here are links to the psychological assessment software that I have published or programmed, along with comments regarding online course development, a practical tool for students of music theory, and a few samples of past graphic design work.
Psychological Assessment Software
NewCat Computer Category Test
Author & Designer: Jeffrey M. Kunka, Ph.D.
https://newcat.newpsyc.com
A cross-platform (Win/Mac) computer version of the Halstead Category Test, considered among the most sensitive tests of cognitive dysfunction. Available to qualified clinicians and trainees in neuropsychology programs. In clinical use for over a decade, NewCat presents, scores, and generates PDF-formatted adult, adolescent, and short-form reports in one affordable package, with features that support both clinical assessment and research.
Emotional Assessment System (EAS-SABE)
Hermann10 Scoring Assistant
Author: James P. Choca, Ph.D.
Designer: Jeffrey M. Kunka, Ph.D.

My colleague James Choca — who authored the first Computer Category Test in 1996 and promoted my developing NewCat — had me design cross-platform versions of his bilingual (English/Spanish) multidimensional personality questionnaire (EAS-SABE) and Rorschach scoring program (Hermann10). Although the latter is no longer current, I have updated the EAS-SABE (Feb. 2024) to run on the latest versions of Windows and macOS. The clinical scales conform to the DSM-5 and the app includes features for both clinical application and research. These are free downloads from his website.
Online Course Development
In 2001, after teaching graduate-level courses in intellectual and personality assessment for some years, I was asked by the department to lead developing a fully-online major in psychology. By 2017 I had designed and taught 11 online courses (illustrated here by the banners I’d prepared for my course syllabi). I do believe that — when done well, which does requires somewhat more work on the part of the instructor — online learning can be at least as effective as classroom instruction.
Music-Related Software
ModeWheel & NewModeWheel
Author & Designer: Jeffrey M. Kunka, Ph.D.
https://modewheelapp.newpsyc.com
In gratitude for the wonderful online lessons in jazz improvisation provided by Danish jazz musician Oliver Prehn, I’ve published two cross-platform (Win/Mac) computer versions of the tool he developed to assist students of music in learning to identify and employ various scales and modes that can add new color to their compositions and improvisations. These are available as free downloads.
Graphic Design Work
Along with teaching and assessment work as a clinical psychologist, I have continued to work on an occasional basis as a freelance graphic designer, employing the skills that first supported me through college. A few examples for clients associated with energy-efficiency programs (and some personal artwork) are featured on the graphic design page.
